Dropped my Nexus 5 Already! :(
« on: November 03, 2013, 10:48:57 AM »
I purchased my Nexus 5 Yesterday from my local o2 shop, didn't decide to go with their mobile phone insurance because it was overpriced. Was going to buy some insurance soon but lucky me, I dropped my phone today and now there is a crack on the front :(

The touch screen is still functioning perfectly but the glass at the front is obviously cracked. I'm just wondering, am I the first person to damage a Nexus 5? Haha! Mainly I'm just wondering how long it will be before stores offer repairs for something like this? I bet it won't be cheap either. I'm not sure but is the glass the same as the glass on the LG G2?

Ouch, that hurts.  I feel for you.  The screen is protected with Gorilla Glass 3 which is normally quite durable.  That must have been a nasty drop.  No idea about a glass repair on an N5.  Probably gonna be pricey.  If you bought it with a credit card I would look and see if it might be covered under their insurance. Many credit cards offer damage insurance for items purchased in the first 30 days or so. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Yeah it is a real shame :( Well it only fell from about 1-2 feet but it landed face down onto a small stone from what I can tell. Typical eh?!

I contacted a couple of local phone repair shops and only one has got back to me so far saying they aren't doing repairs for the phone just yet, understandable seeing as it is a brand new device.

Some good news though, it turns out I do have some insurance that will cover it, should be getting it sorted soon :)

Thanks for your input Babyfacemagee

Well...this isn't great news  :(

http://www.t3.com/news/nexus-5-screen-expensive-to-repair

So a message to all N5 users, DO NOT break the screen...it will be a hefty repair job.

As a followup to my previous post. I contacted a local phone repair shop that said they were able to do repairs on the N5 and the quoted price for the screen repair was 240!!

The guy on the phone did say that the price will be high at first but it will drop in the not too distant future, but that's damn expensive at the moment!!

I'm sorry to hear what's happened Weagerton, brought a lump to my throat.

240 is very expensive, do you have a 16 or 32GB N5?

Its very expensive! Luckily I am covered under some insurance I found out I had! Thank goodness!

Its a 32gb model , absolutely loving using it, even if there is a god awful crack in the screen!

I set mine down face down on a desktop and it shattered! LG told me it would be $146 to replace it. Google said they wouldn't refund it because the screen is broken. Nobody seems to care that the screen was faulty and shattered under ordinary use!

I'm really starting to suspect there's a scam at work here, and I'm angry about it. LG is selling these cheap piece-of-junk phones through Google and then scamming people out of even more money to fix them when they break because they're cheaply made!

Don't be surprised if you see this on the news pretty soon.

I have had possession of my Nexus 5 for less than a week and the screen cracked horizontally (edge to edge) just above the mid line...  phone was not dropped.  Google and LG both will not take ownership of a defective product.  Very disappointing customer support.

I received my n5 on my birthday and over the weekend it fell out of my pocket when I was sitting on a bar stool. three and half feet off the ground. First time I dropped it. I still cant believe it shattered.  I thought gorilla glass 3 was durable. Does anyone else think the glass is defective?  Called LG and Google this morning, Nobody wants to cover it. Just sent it to LG a little while ago. I even sent it overnight so it will be in Texas by 12pm their time.

One would tend to believe there  was some trauma somewhere that caused the crack. Highly doubtful it randomly cracked on its only.

Just saying.

I have seen a video on YouTube where a guy repeatedly drops the phone over and over again on cement, with just the protection of a Cruzerlite case. It sounds like there may be some faulty phones, or some very unlucky people. I pray I don't have this issue as it's my first android, and something like that would scare me off as I have dropped my iPhone 4 numerous times over the years with no problems.

Same here, cracked screen after short drop. Seems to be a common problem as reported across the web.

I have had iPhone 3GS & Galaxy S3 and they all survived higher drops without damage. The Nexus 5 (and 4) lack of survivability is ridiculous for a portable device.

Bottom line is - yes it is a great phone but it is NOT designed to survive daily wear and tear so I would not recommend anyone buying it.

There are a range of covers now on the market but unless you select one designed for tradesmen and the military, ie it becomes big and bulky, buy another phone.
