Just a quick update on this. Having now reverted back to 4.4.4 (I missed the exposed features too much) I can now confirm that this works brilliantly with my Nexus 5, particularly in conjunction with XBMC.
I don't have a Sky Sports subscription, but last night I watched the Live PGA Golf from 7pm - 2am using XBMC on my N5 to stream to my chromecast. For me this was the missing piece of the puzzle as I never managed to get the Avia Player solution to stream properly (with the unity XBMC). Now however, it all works perfectly. Bravo Google.
If you're wondering what XBMC is, how to install it and what it's capable of then please go ahead and fire your questions this way as I'd be happy to help others benefit too.

I ran ART for a few months and found it was quicker at opening apps like Facebook, but other than that I couldn't really notice the difference.
That said, when I ran it on the Android L preview I was getting awesome battery life, often still over 50% after 16 hours heavy use.
Like others above I reverted back to Dalvik purely because of the Xposed frameworks customisation features.
Thank you for your detailed description
I also use Google's Play Music and don't have any of the above problems. It's worth maybe reinstalling the application and clearing the cache. If all else fails you could always try a different media player, like MX Player or VLC (there are several in the play store).
Personally I'm far too lazy to find album art, but have found this app (see link below) that does a pretty decent job in filling in the gaps.

I'd have been interested had I not already paid the extortionate price for the LG quick cover case.
Look what I found... Some wonderful chap on xda has had a go at making an English version of the app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2506195
Sadly it's not working for me on the L preview, but if someone wants to try it on Kitkat then be my guest

Awesome. I've been waiting for this for a long time. Hopefully it'll work on the L preview?

Cheers for the info NOM
I actually installed the L preview last week so have witnessed a few of the issues first hand. The helium one is particularly annoying as the Art mode causes all your apps to be reoptimized on reboot.
I've also had several crashes and situations where my I'm stuck in a loop and can't unlock my phone. But that said it's a beta, so all that is to be expected.
I should probably change back... But, well see

Are you gonna do it NOM? I think I will when I get home. From what I can tell people are loving it.
Has anyone on here taken the plunge yet?
